Newport 818-IS-1

The Newport 818-IS-1 is a Integrating Sphere Fiber Optic Detector that employs a design that is symmetrical to ensure precise calibration. Featuring a dual port, dual detector configuration and specially designed optics, this detector offers exceptional flexibility across a wide range of wavelengths while improving temperature sensitivity compared to conventional detectors. The 818-IS-1 can be used with compatible power meters or with Newport's Model 8800/8200 PTSOPM power meter modules. The detector's front port accommodates various adapters for connector terminated fibers.

The 818-IS-1 accepts bare fiber as well as FC, ST, LC, and SC terminated fiber inputs with an optical power input capability of up to 200 mW. It is NIST traceable standard calibrated across the wavelength range of 400 nm thorough 1650 nm. This data consisting of calibration information can be found in the calibration module integrated into an electrical connector, enabling compatibility with a variety of power meters that use calibration modules. The 818-IS-1 is equipped with a mini DIN connector integrated at the end of the cable for easy connection to compatible power meters. This detector incorporates calibrated attenuation of input light to enable accurate measurement of high light levels without an attenuator.

The 818-IS-1 is constructed as a rugged assembly to withstand rigorous conditions in production and laboratory environments. However, it is susceptible to mechanical shocks and exposure to temperatures outside the specified storage limits. The dual detector balanced design effectively mitigates most temperature sensitivities, ensuring highly accurate measurements over a broad range. The rear port of the 818-IS-1 is specifically designed for measuring light from bare fibers, utilizing the FP3-FH1 bare fiber holder. The fiber tip can extend up to 0.25 inches (6 mm) without compromising measurement accuracy, but exceeding this distance can lead to damage to the fiber or the interior of the sphere. The port receptacle is designed to facilitate proper alignment of the adapter, preventing any potential damage.

The 818-IS-1 accurately measures photocurrents only up to the rated saturation current. Beyond this threshold, the measured power will exhibit nonlinearity due to voltages generated by the photocurrent passing through the series resistances of the detectors. While the saturation current is independent of wavelength, the maximum measurable power before saturation occurs depends on the wavelength because the detector system's responsivity is wavelength-dependent. The 818-IS-1 can be used to measure pulsed light sources, but caution should be exercised to avoid exceeding the pulsed saturation level.
