The Newport 818P-001-12 is a Free-Space Photodiode Sensor designed for use with Optical Power and Energy Meters. Designed as a thermopile device, this sensor offers exceptional performance and reliability. It is equipped with a threaded OD3 attenuator that is removeable to ensure precise light intensity measurements, adhering to NIST-traceable calibration standards. To enhance versatility, the 818P-001-12 includes a detachable DB15 module for calibration that facilitates easy integration with various measurement setups. Additionally, screw-in fiber-optic adapters that are optional can be used, enabling the accurate measurement of fiber power. With the appropriate adapters, this sensor can be utilized for the calculation of optical power measurements from bare optical or connectorized fibers.
The 818P-001-12 can safely accommodate up to 250-µm bare fibers with the use of a compatible adapter mount and bare fiber holder, eliminating the risk of fiber damage. Featuring a BNC connector with a removable calibration module, this sensor seamlessly integrates with current power meters, extending its functionality. This integration allows direct connections to lock-in amplifiers or ammeters, and it enables the output of the detector to be visualized with an oscilloscope when connected to a preamplifier capable of displaying voltage to current data. If an extended cable length is required, the BNC connector can be linked to a second BNC cable. It is important to note that the maximum measurable power of the 818P-001-12 is influenced by several factors, including photodiode current output saturation, the wavelength of incoming light, the use of an attenuator, temperature, and the maximum current input value supported by the connected power meter.
