Newport 840-C

The Newport 840-C is a Handheld Optical Power Meter designed to offer advanced features for background subtraction and digital averaging. It is compatible with Low-Power Si, Ge, and InGaAs detectors. The power meter is capable of seamless connectivity with detectors through dedicated in-line calibration modules. These detachable modules provide specific calibration and operational information tailored to the detector in use. With a range of detector accessories, users can conduct power measurements for both free-space and fiber coupled applications. The 840-C has a 4-digit backlit LCD screen, displaying DC and AC peak-to-peak power measurements in dBm and W units.

The 840-C supports various readout options, including linear, dB, dBm, and linear ratio. The wavelength selection can be adjusted in 1 nm increments, and an audible tone feature allows convenient tuning without visual confirmation. The power meter ensures portability with rechargeable batteries and comes with a travel case. Furthermore, it possesses the ability to retain recent operating parameters when powered off. The LCD screen of the 840-C enables easy reading even in low-light conditions, while an audio indicator assists users in optimizing signals without the need to constantly monitor the display. The instrument calibration wavelength is displayed in nanometers on the lower right-hand side of the screen for user convenience.

The 840-C includes an analog output that enables other instruments to monitor power readings by providing a voltage output proportional to the detector current. The power meter incorporates an ultra-low-noise and thermally stable transimpedance input amplifier to enhance linearity and sensitivity. It comprises a photodetector, a memory module, and an electronic display. The photodetector, connected to the power meter through a standard BNC connector, acts as the sensor. The memory module, an in-line device, supplies calibration information specific to the photodetector to the 840-C power meter. This module connects to the photodetector with the electronic display and BNC connector through an eight-pin DIN connector that is sub-miniature.

The 840-C operates using a rechargeable Ni-Cd battery, which can be recharged using an AC adaptor. When the power meter is turned off, the batteries recharge within 8 hours. Alternatively, the power meter can be powered by the AC adaptor for continuous operation. The AC adaptor provides DC voltage to the power meter via a 5.5mm diameter phone jack. The 840-C's microprocessor software is stored in a one-time-programmable, read-only-memory, located on the microprocessor chip. Temporary storage is facilitated by internal RAM within the microprocessor, which can be utilized to store calibration constants retrieved from the EPROM during power-up. Boasting the power and precision comparable to a typical benchtop meter, this power meter offers exceptional power sensitivity from 100 pW to 2 W.
