The Newport 918D-IS-1 is a Universal Fiber Optic Photodiode Detector that boasts accurate calibration and compatibility with various fiber types. Utilizing a symmetrical integrating sphere design, this detector ensures reliable calibration irrespective of the measured fiber type. The integrating sphere incorporates a unique dual detector design with advanced optics, significantly improving temperature sensitivity compared to conventional detectors. To guarantee precision, the 918D-IS-1 undergoes full calibration against traceable standards, covering a broad wavelength range from 400 nm to 1650 nm.
Featuring an integral DB15 connector and a dual port design, the 918D-IS-1 offers flexibility in light measurement from straight and angle cleaved bare fibers. The sphere is constructed using a highly reflective thermoplastic material, providing enhanced calibration stability under varying conditions of temperature, humidity, and prolonged usage compared to coated spheres. The rear port of the 918D-IS-1, from which the blue cable exits, is specifically designed for measuring light from bare fibers and is compatible with the included FP3-FH1 bare fiber holder.
It is important to note that the 918D-IS-1 is suitable for fibers with numerical apertures of 0.29 or less. Higher numerical apertures may cause some of the light to strike the interior of the port before entering the sphere, leading to a slight decrease in measurement accuracy. The 918D-IS-1 accurately measures photocurrents up to the rated saturation current, beyond which the measured power becomes nonlinear due to voltages generated by the photocurrent passing through the detectors' series resistances. When measuring pulsed light sources, precautions must be taken to prevent exceeding the pulsed saturation level of the detector.
One of the notable features of the 918D-IS-1 is its calibrated attenuation capability, allowing accurate measurement of high light levels without the need for an attenuator. Although the detector can handle high light levels, it is optimized for fiber sources, where the emitted cone-shaped beam spreads out before striking the reflective material of the sphere. The reflective material has a rating of 8 J/cm², which should not be exceeded. Additionally, due to its small port size, the 918D-IS-1 exhibits reduced sensitivity to ambient light compared to most detectors. Nevertheless, it is recommended to plug the unused port with a blank plug to minimize potential interference.
