The 501B by Newport is a Laser Diode Driver that is designed to meet the stringent requirements of a wide range of applications, including fiber optic communications, spectroscopy, and other disciplines that demand precise and stable optical power from a laser source. This laser diode driver excels in providing optimal stability and quiet operation. The 501B has a user-friendly design with front panel controls that have been intuitively arranged, enhancing ease of operation. Users can select between constant current or constant laser power modes, with the option to finely adjust current resolution settings via dual current-level selection, ensuring precise control over the laser diode's output.

The 501B comes equipped with a USB interface, offering convenient connectivity options. It includes a fully independent current limit feature and a monitor photodiode that can be reverse biased within a range of 0-5 V without the need for an external power supply. Safety is paramount, and the 501B incorporates comprehensive laser diode safety and user protection features that adhere to CDRH and CE standards. It employs relay shorting and redundant RET circuits to safeguard the laser diode during the initial turn-on sequence. The output current gradually ramps up to the desired operating level, and the current limit remains fully independent.

The 501B also offers external analog modulation capabilities, allowing users to control voltage or modulate the output signal. In high bandwidth mode, modulation can be achieved at frequencies of up to 100 kHz. In low bandwidth mode, users can achieve slow modulation for precise laser output power control or wavelength tuning, using external control circuitry while maintaining low noise operation. The front panel of the 501B is organized into seven distinct areas, each dedicated to specific functions and controlled by a corresponding knob.
