Newport 8016

The 8016 by Newport is a High-Density Modular Laser Diode Controller, a device engineered to excel in laser diode control, characterization, and testing applications. With its advanced circuit designs and meticulous layout of laser diode driver modules, this controller offers users a highly stable and low noise output current, adjustable from 25 milliamps to 10 Amps. The inclusion of an analog modulation input enables precise control of the laser output for various applications, including power level regulation. The 8016 provides access to laser diode parameters with an impressive 16-bit resolution, allowing for comprehensive characterization of the laser diode's forward voltage.

When temperature stabilization is necessary, users can benefit from the LDD/TEC module, which grants complete control over the 8016’s laser diodes. The TEC section ensures temperature stability, while the LDD section integrates an internal function generator for modulation. Safety is a top priority for the 8016, featuring time-tested laser diode protection measures such as input power module filters that safeguard against transients, a slow turn-on sequence, multiple output shorting circuits, and independent current limiting functionality. Installation of the controller is straightforward, as it is designed for typical mounting in a rack system cabinet, with rack mounting tabs on the front panel, facilitating seamless integration into an instrument chassis mount. Moreover, standard RS-232C output and input ports enable the connection of multiple mainframes, facilitating the construction of large test and characterization stations.

Enhanced data presentation and system control are made possible through the inclusion of an LCD graphics display on the 8016. The MASTER display provides an overview of the entire system configuration, as well as the status of each module. Users can navigate initial setup routines and module operation effortlessly using the front panel's soft keys. Real-time control of the output can be achieved using the control knob or by entering the desired set point on the keypad. Conveniently, MENU and FUNC keys allow access to saved system configurations and repetitive procedures, simplifying operation. All controls are clearly labeled, and instructions are easily understood, ensuring user-friendly operation. For seamless integration into existing systems, the 8016 can be operated with a GPIB/IEEE-488.2 interface, providing access to all control and measurement functions.
