The 8742 by Newport is a Picomotor Open-Loop Motion Controller designed to effectively drive New Focus open-loop Picomotor devices across four axes. This motion controller is specifically optimized for streamlined performance and versatile operation. It can be seamlessly controlled through either Ethernet or USB communication interfaces, both of which are facilitated by Windows DLL and supported by sample LabVIEW VIs. The controller further features an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) Windows application that incorporates a device auto-discovery feature. Upon configuration with the communication interfaces, the 8742 showcases its capability to execute a diverse range of motion tasks, including jogging, relative movements, and absolute positioning.

The 8742 can manage one of the four available 4-pin RJ-22 single output ports, ensuring compatibility with any single-channel Picomotor actuator. This controller can be daisy-chained to connect up to 31 open or closed-loop controllers, each equipped with four channels. This networked configuration empowers the management of up to 124 standard Picomotor actuators. By utilizing compatible cables, users can establish a master-slave relationship, permitting communication with the entire stack through a single master controller connected to a PC. This controller has an embedded HTTP server that generates dynamic web pages for immediate response and command input. The 8742 also offers an array of advanced features, including programmable settings stored in non-volatile memory, a plug-and-play USB 2.0 interface, 10/100-Mbps Ethernet connectivity, an RS-485 LAN interface, over-temperature protection, and a local power on/off switch.
