Newport MM4006

The Newport MM4006 is a high-performance Motion Controller/Driver designed to provide exceptional trajectory accuracy and programming functionality. This multi-axis controller offers precise control over displacement and synchronization with external acquisition, command, or measurement strings, making it a valuable tool for a wide range of applications. With the capability to handle up to eight axes of motion, the MM4006 can accommodate various motorized DC or stepper motor variants, while delivering a motor drive power of 500 W. Its direct compatibility with Newport motion devices enhances user-friendliness and elevates the overall performance of motion systems.

The MM4006 features an 80-bit floating-point, 133 MHz microprocessor, enabling high-resolution computation and facilitating upward migration. Its digital PID-FF servo loop updates all axes at a cycle time of 300 µs, ensuring accurate positioning and velocity profile tracking that is precise. The controller further supports smooth motion with its precision 16-bit DC motor command output. To ensure user equipment's safety, the low-noise PWM amplifiers are individually optimized for each stage and equipped with additional protection circuitry. The MM4006 provides multiple modes of positioning, including circular, jogging, and point-to-point interpolation.

A standout feature of the MM4006 is the ability to configure precise synchronization with external data capturing tools, triggered by position or distance interval. The controller also offers an integrated 4-channel, 12-bit analog input, enabling simultaneous data and position acquisition. Users can opt for an additional 4-channel analog output to track motion-related data like position, speed, or following error. The presence of a parallel TTL I/O port with 8 lines of inputs and outputs facilitates monitoring, controlling, or synchronizing with external devices, such as shutters, lasers, valves, or relays. Programming complex motions is made easy with the MM4006, because of its powerful set of over 150 intuitive, 2-letter commands.

The MM4006’s 64 kB Flash non-volatile user program memory allows for storing up to 100 user-defined programs for computer-independent usage. Other sophisticated capabilities include trajectory, velocity, or on-the-fly position changes for alignment routines and complex motion. The MM4006 offers several computer interfaces, including RS-232-C and IEEE-488 (GPIB) or RS-485, and features a large backlit LCD display with four user-configurable soft-keys and a programmable status display. For manual speed and direction control, an optional 8-axis analog joystick is available. The controller also supports closed-loop operation of stepper motors, user-selectable displacement units, user-settable compensation for accuracy and backlash errors, and multilingual display capabilities.
